Coolmore Stud Stakes Spring target for Capitalist

Co-trainer Peter Snowden thinks that Capitalist will be at his best over the sprinting distances and at this stage is ruling out the Group 1 $1m Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield over 1600m during the Spring Carnival.

“I think he is just a sprinter. Don’t take away what he has and he has a dynamic turn of foot, but he also has good race sense. When the time come we might have to push him a bit further to get 1400m, but I think a mile would just not be his cup of tea,” Peter Snowden told Racing Ahead.

But while co-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden are planning Capitalist’s Spring campaign, his immediate Autumn preparation will be decided over the next couple of days.

Capitalist bounced back from his first defeat when second to the Gai Waterhouse trained Kiss And Make Up in the Group 2 $300,000 UNSW Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 5 to score a half a length win in the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

Peter Snowden said that would meet with the colt’s connection to discuss if he would be sent for a break or race on to try to complete the two year old triple crown by running in the Group 1 $1m Inglis Sires’ (1400m) at Randwick on April 2 and possibly in the Group 1 $500,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick two weeks later.

“I will need to talk to the team today with a decision to made in the next couple of days,” Peter Snowden said.

“There is a lot of talk after the race and with a bit of rocket fuel, there is all sorts of races mentioned. So it’s not the time to talk about the future on the day so we will have to sit down and talk about it today or tomorrow.”

“He has done a great job the horse. He doesn’t need to prove himself anymore. He has had five runs now that I am mindful of going forward as a three year old. He hasn’t been overtaxed but he has been in work quite a while, along time for different races.”

“If it was my choice I would be saying give him a bit of a breather, but it not my choice, it is a team decision to be made and we will go with that.”

“When the time is right we will make that decision in the next few days.”

Capitalist started his racing career with a win in the Listed $150,000 Newgate Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick on October 3 and then had a short break before winning the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1100m) at Wyong on December 17.

The Written Tycoon colt then went on to score a comfortable in in the $2m Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 9 before running second in the Todman Stakes prior to his Golden Slipper win.

Last Saturday’s Golden Slipper winning cheque of $2 million took Capitalist overall earning to just over $3.5 million for his four wins from five starts.
